Oregon Sunstone formed approximately 13 to 17 million years ago during massive volcanic activity in what is now southeastern Oregon. As ancient lava flows slowly cooled across the high desert, crystals of labradorite feldspar formed beneath the surface.

Within some Oregon Sunstone crystals are tiny inclusions of native copper. These copper platelets interact with light to create the gemstone’s distinctive schiller effect, producing flashes that can shift between gold, red, green and champagne.

Rather than simply reflecting light from its surface, the stone can appear to glow from within.

That natural phenomenon gives every Oregon Sunstone its own personality. No two stones display their internal color and schiller in exactly the same way, making the gemstone especially appealing to collectors and those drawn to jewelry with a strong connection to nature.
